Posttreatment tooth movement: for better or for worse.

چکیده
P osttreatment tooth movement is inevitable, but its degree depends on a variety of factors that are both iatrogenic and innate to each patient. Although various retention techniques have been developed to minimize posttreatment movement, it is unrealistic to believe that the entire dentition can be retained in all dimensions. Relapse is usually considered an adverse phenomenon, but some dimensions of posttreatment tooth movement might actually enhance occlusal function and esthetics. Favorable movement is often considered as ‘‘settling’’ if that aspect of the occlusion is improved over time. In 1998, the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) published an objective method of evaluating posttreatment results by using 7 cast measurements and 1 radiographic measurement. Formerly called the Objective Grading System, the ABO now refers to this as the Cast Radiograph Evaluation (C-R Eval). This evaluation technique is used to score final casts and the panoramic radiograph produced within 12 months of debanding. The 8 scoring parameters are alignment/rotations, marginal ridges, buccolingual inclination, overjet, occlusal contacts, occlusal relationships, interproximal contacts, and root angulation. The C-R Eval was developed to increase objectivity in evaluation of treatment results; it uses a point system with precise criteria for cast and radiographic grading to score the case result in terms of finishing and detailing. Each case is scored after individual and group calibration of examiners in an effort to secure equity in grading among all examiners. Hence, 8 aspects of the

The purpose of this article was reviewing the literature related to the mutual effects of endodontics and orthodontics on each other providing documented information that can be used by dentists in clinical practice. The effect of orthodontic treatment on the dental pulp and its role in root resorption, the influence of previous trauma to the tooth and endodontic treatment in orthodontic tooth ...
متن کاملEffect of Ovariectomy on Orthodontic Tooth Movement in Rats
Background and Aim: Estrogen affects the metabolism in females. This study aimed to assess the effect of absence of estrogen on orthodontic tooth movement in rats. Materials and Methods: In this animal study, 55 rats were randomly divided into four groups. Group 1 (n=10) had intact ovaries. In group 2 (n=15), ovaries were intact but the rats were subjected to stress due to tooth preparation. I...

Objective(s): to determine the effect of different doses of caffeine on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in rats. Materials and Methods: Forty male 250-300 g Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups of ten animals each and received 0 (control), 1 g/l, 2 g/l and 3 g/l caffeine in tap water for 3 days. Orthodontic appliances were ligated between the maxillary first molars and in...
متن کاملMeasuring 3-dimensional tooth movement with a 3-dimensional surface laser scanner.
INTRODUCTION Our aims in this study were to (1) develop a method of measuring 3-dimensional (3D) tooth movement using a 3D surface laser scanner, (2) test the accuracy of this method, and (3) compare the measurements with those from cephalometric radiographs. METHODS A method of superimposing pretreatment and posttreatment models on the palatal rugae was developed, and an experimental model w...

It appears that until bone graft has not achieved 100% success, intraradicular diseases remain controversial and therefore, different treatment plans are suggested for them. Treating intraradicular diseases depend on many factors: maxillary molars are more prone to bone loss and have worse prognosis. To assess prognosis more carefully these factors should be considered: 1) bone loss: its apical...
